The Cost-Effective Alternative to Pipe Replacement
In 1987, in cooperation with the U.S. Naval Research Laboratories,
American Pipe Lining (San Diego) developed a cured in place
pipe lining technology to restore the nickel copper CHT (Collection,
Holding Transfer) piping systems aboard US Naval Aircraft Carriers.
The technology has literally saved tax-payers millions of dollars on
each ship because of the costly expense and disruption of a re-pipe.
The process was so successful that the US Navy now epoxy lines much
of its piping for new carriers (e.g. USS Reagan and USS Bush). In
1988-1990 the application first received EPA approval and then
NSF-61 certification for potable water
piping and was first used in a land based application at the
Composite Medical Facility, Elmendorf AFB, Alaska.
A Master Plumber for more than
25 years, Peter J Wood established American Pipe Lining-Great
Lakes securing rights as a licensee of APL-San Diego in 2002. Since then
APL-Great Lakes has aggressively pursued other epoxy
technologies offering small diameter pipe rehabilitation for both
Michigan and Ohio with some projects also in Illinois.
POTABLE WATER
SYSTEMS
The APL-2000 cleaning and pipe lining
system cleans the existing pipe and then applies a coat of epoxy to
the interior pipe. The process is totally environmentally friendly,
avoiding chemicals to remove the corrosion. APL uses this process on
restoring the water distribution system for apartment and condo
communities, high rise professional buildings, college dormitories,
commercial pools, and historic homes offering up to a 60% savings by
avoiding demolition, abatement and restoration costs.
NON-POTABLE
WATER SYSTEMS
After due diligence APL-Great Lakes in
2005 acquired technology that uses resin cured pipe for small
diameter pipe rehabilitation. Unlike APL-2000, resin cured pipe does
not need the integrity of the existing pipe to rehabilitate the
system. Resin cured pipe allows for the rehabilitation of broken,
blocked or damaged pipe using existing points of access.

POTABLE WATER
SYSTEMS
1/2" to 8" Diameters
Pipe corrosion occurs
in virtually all types of piping systems beginning from the moment
they are put into service. The APL-2000 cleaning and epoxy pipe
coating process provides a quick and permanent solution for
extending the useful life of older piping systems.
Over years, corrosion and mineral build-up in piping
obstructs water flow, collects lead and other potentially harmful
elements, and results in the gradual deterioration of the pipe
itself and overall water quality. Within 15- 20 years time, as much
as 70% of the pipe's original flow capacity can be lost as a result
of internal pipe corrosion.
The adverse effects of this natural deterioration are
all too familiar: colored, bad tasting and foul smelling drinking
water, poor flow and heat transfer, and an abundance of leaks.
Recent and ongoing research by the EPA has conveyed a
growing concern over the adverse effects of high lead and copper
levels in infants, children and pregnant women. The U.S. Dept. of
Health and Human Services postulates that lead is the number one
environmental threat to our childrens' health, with increasing
exposure rates caused by the continued consumption of water from
aging, corroded potable water systems, many of which are still
fitted with original lead-based plumbing fixtures. American Pipe
Lining's epoxy system will provide a permanent protective barrier
within the pipe halting the further leaching of these and other
harmful elements.

NON -POTABLE WATER
SYSTEMS
1-1/2" to 12"
Deteriorating
underground piping systems provides unique challenges to
rehabilitate pipe.
Resin cured pipe is an
innovative epoxy application with a 15 year proven track record.
Millions of linear
feet of pipe have been rehabilitated with resin cured pipe which
allows for the starting and stopping of the resin cured liner
anywhere along the length of pipe. It adheres to the original pipe
as well as building a new pipe inside the old one.
The material is so
versatile that it can even be used to span a void where there is a
section of the old pipe missing.
Resin cured pipe is
resistant to chemicals and has withstood 3 month immersion tests in
many chemicals including hydrochloric acid. Resins are odorless and
non-toxic and NSF-14 certified.
The non-potable
relining system can be applied to all types of pipes including
storm, sewer, roof drains, conduit, pool lines, chemical lines and
pressure pipes. The system is idea for residential, commercial
and industrial applications.
